What is RSS

RSS Logo RSS is a technology which allows the website to do the work rather than you, the web user.

Using RSS, you can track updates from multiple website in one place. You can think about it like subscribing to a magazine or newspaper, except it’s free. Whenever a new article is posted by a site that you are subscribed to, a description of it is sent to you automatically, then you can choose to go and read that article if it sounds appealing. Pretty useful, eh?

Benefits of RSS

  • Allows you to see that there has been an update on a website that you are subscribed to without having to visit the site to check.
  • By using an RSS reader, you can receive updates from any computer, by logging into your reader account.
  • RSS bookmark

  • If you use the RSS feed to bookmark the page in your bookmarks toolbar, a drop down menu will be available, which will have a list of the most recent articles posted by that author. It will update when new content is added.

You can test this out by bookmarking Woods World. click the subscribe using live bookmarks button.

How to Use RSS

Get an RSS reader. There are many different readers you can use. Personally I use Google Reader.

Once you have your reader, you need to find some interesting sites you would like to subscribe to. You can usually find links for subscribing in highly visible places on most blog/article and news sites. You will notice mine is in the top right of the screen, on the sidebar.

Once you have located the link, follow these steps (I’ll demonstrate using Google Reader):

1: Hover over the link and select your reader.

2: When you arrive at your reader’s menu page, click the subscribe button.

3: Now you will receive updates of new content from web sites that you have subscribed to. With the title and the first part of the article on display, so you can choose to read the rest of it, or mark it as read if it doesn’t catch your attention. Job done.
